pin pricks in a mongolian blanket
i must quickly mention a highlight, pretty close to the top of the list. last night i left the ger to commit to nature the change for that which it had given me, to spend a penny, to urinate, to piss under the stars... and what stars they were.
after completing the transaction i called the guys out into the freezing night to see, and we spent the next hour or so with our necks craned upwards taking it all in. i've never seen a night sky like it. not one cloud anywhere in sight, no moon, in fact the only other light than the stars themselves were the reflections of the stars in the silent lake. it was stunning. humbling. incredible. enriching. life and soul affirming. after 10 minutes our eyes had adjusted and we could see just how full the night sky actually is. and... woah.
it turned out marc had done an astronomy course and so he was able to point out a few remembered constellations and star clusters. we could clearly see jupiter; and venus for a while before it disappeared behind the horizon.
i saw two shooting stars.
we even saw two satellites journey overhead (except ash who seemed to be facing the wrong way every time something happened).
as the pinprick blanket passed over us we joked about how insignificant we are, about how unimportant, so we might as well drive big cars and eat meat and do all manner of environmentally unfriendly activities, because it won't make any difference; in 5 million years the sun will explode and destroy earth whatever we do.
we were joking, alright?
it was a good time, and an amazing view. if only the cameras could have picked anything up.
